Members' Groups

Members’ Groups are sub-committees within the AAH that represent the interests of the following members. The Chair of each Members’ Group sits on the Executive Committee.

The AAH has five member’s groups. To find out more about each group follow the links below or those in the left hand index bar.

Student Members’ Group
The student committee (now known as the Student Members Committee or SMC) is made up of 15 student members who meet regularly to organise and oversee SMC events, activities and publications. The group offers support and communication networks for undergraduate and postgraduate students, particularly those involved in doctoral research.

Independent Member’s Group
The independent art historians form a very diverse members’ group. Many earn all or some of their income from freelance activities such as lecturing in colleges, schools or adult education classes, from curating, writing, editing, or translating art-related materials. The Independent Members’ Group provides an online newsgroup and communication network. The introduction of an Online Directory of Independent Art Historians will provide members with an opportunity to promote their freelance professional services.

Teaching, Learning & Research (formerly Universities & Colleges Members’) Group
The Teaching, Learning and Research Group represents the interests of members involved in all aspects of university and higher education. The Teaching, Learning and Research Group actively involves itself in current issues affecting those involved in teaching and studying art and design history at a tertiary level, including debates surrounding research assessment and publishing.

Schools Members’ Group
The Schools Members' Group is run by and for teachers of art and design history in schools and further education colleges in the UK. The schools group organises a variety of activities including an annual ‘Ways of Seeing’ conference for teachers and students which takes place at Tate Britain. The schools pages on the AAH website are aimed at making it easier for teachers to communicate with each other and share information and resources.

Museums & Galleries Members’ Group
The Museums and Galleries Members’ Group represents the interests of members working in museums or galleries in the UK. The group offers an email communication and news network for members, and organises a forum at the annual AAH conference. This group is currently looking to broaden its membership and would welcome the participation and contribution of AAH members involved in this field.

If you have any questions regarding any of the above members’ groups please contact the chair of the members’ group, or forward your question to admin@aah.org.uk
