Call for papers - Ceroplastics - International Congress on Wax Modelling

Posted on Tuesday, 14th March 2017

For the first time in 40 years, the major institutions related to the art of Ceroplastics or Wax Modelling will meet again in an International Congress in London, presented at the Gordon Museum of Pathology, Kings College, in collaboration with The Worshipful Company of Wax Chandlers and Madame Tussauds.?

Four decades after the pioneering Ceroplastics Congresses (Florence, 1975 and London, 1978), interest in wax modelling is now more intense and has gathered interest from the fields of Science, Anatomy, Art History, Sculpture, Restoration, Conservation and Contemporary Art.

The ‘International Congress on Wax Modelling’ in London is the first of this kind in 40 years because it will present a comprehensive analysis of wax modelling with: History (Major Collections), Anatomy and Science (Anatomical/botanical models), Art and Portraiture (Effigies, Portraits, Waxworks, Funeral Masks, Votive), Conservation and Restoration (maintaining, cleaning, repairing), Techniques, Contemporary Art.
The advantageous characteristics of wax have led to the use of this material over the centuries for numerous purposes and the aim of this congress to explore many of them.

This project is intended as a fantastic opportunity for the gathering of experts, professionals and artists interested and engaged in the study, conservation, restoration, development and protection of collections and artworks created in wax. We will also have a “Facial reconstruction” workshop and a demonstration of creating an anatomical model using the 18th century technique by Medical Artists. Also we will have an exhibition of contemporary artists to show that wax modelling is a contemporary technique.

One of the final goals will be the building of a network of specialists with the aim of furthering knowledge and developing best practice for the conservation and restoration of extant collections.

1-3 September 2017, The Gordon Museum of Pathology, Kings College London, Guy’s Campus, St. Thomas' Street, London SE1 9RT.
