AAH Student Summer School 2001

Held at The University of Birmingham 30 June - 1 July 2001

Don’t miss this opportunity!
Book your place now for a weekend of intellectual stimulation, networking and fun! The second AAH Summer School for research students at every level promises to be exciting, practical and inspiring. Whether you are in the final stages of your MA or PhD, an undergraduate planning to take a higher degree, or somewhere in between, you will leave the Summer School with fresh ideas about your research and your future.

You will have the opportunity to make a short presentation of your own work, contribute to lively discussions, find answers to your research problems, network with people studying related topics and think about (or re-think!) your future as an historian of art and visual culture

To ensure the intimacy and constructive interaction necessary for such an event, bookings are restricted to 50 delegates.

Invited speakers
Over two days of structured discussion and presentations we will hear and discuss papers by Dr Colin Rhodes, Reader in Art History and Theory at Loughborough University and Reviews Editor of Art History, and the artist Dr Dorian Ker, a lecturer at Essex University and an expert on the Italian conceptual art movement known as Arte Povera. The Chair of the AAH, Professor Shearer West, will make a welcoming address to delegates. All talks will be on subjects of wide interest to students of the history of art and visual culture.

Discussion sessions will include a panel of experienced academics, including our guest speakers and art historians from the Department of Art History at Birmingham.

Careers in Art History: Curator
Many art history and museum studies students consider the possibility of a curatorial career. We are therefore fortunate to have Caroline Campbell from the National Gallery, London, to talk about the diversity of her role as a curator.

Provisional timetable

Saturday 30 June
10.00 am Arrival, registration and tea/coffee
10.30 am Welcoming address by Professor Shearer West, Chair of the AAH.
10.45 am Presentations by individual students, each of ten minutes duration.

These will indicate the speaker’s areas of inquiry and highlight matters they would like to discuss over the weekend, or on which they seek collaboration with others researching complementary topics, or with which they have particular problems. Approximately eight such presentations will be followed by group discussion of the issues raised.

1.00 pm Lunch will be taken together in the University Hall refectory, giving
delegates a chance to meet each other and continue discussing their concerns.
2.00 pm The afternoon will commence with a paper by one of our guest speakers,
followed by questions and discussion.

A further eight presentations will then be made by delegates, and will be discussed before we break from the formal setting and relax with a drink.

7.30 pm Conference dinner (included in the overall price).

Sunday 1 July
This will follow a similar pattern, finishing at 4.00 pm.
We anticipate that about 30 delegates will be able to give presentations and slots for these are being allocated on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.
